Happy Entrepreneur with text: How To Be Super Productive With Zero Stress (An Entrepreneurship Secret)
You’ve just woken up, ready for another day on the entrepreneurial adventure. You look at your To-Do list and there are 270 things on it! Are you excited for the day?

Overwhelmed and stressed? Probably. Excited? Definitely not.

No human being would be excited about being in business with such a long To-Do list.

“I don’t want a To-Do List. I want a Done List.” Kim White

Entrepreneurs want to accomplish things. But how do you get things done without long To-Do Lists?

That’s where mapping comes in. What’s mapping? Mapping is the secret to being super productive without being stressed and overwhelmed.

Here are 3 reasons mapping will help you get your business GPS on the right track.

What Is Mapping?

Mapping is what it sounds like - it’s the GPS for your business.

Are you even using a GPS in your business? In other words, what are you focusing on this year?

“I spend way too many days thinking I have so many things to do today and then focusing on all the things. But when I write them all out it lightens the lift and I can see what I physically can get done.” Jill Olish

Mapping is the process that helps you to set one goal to focus on at a time.

Step 1 - Start by writing out the things that you want to happen in your business. What are the things you want to do most? And what will have the highest value if you focus on those things?

“Do not put time as a factor right now. Have the freedom to write your wants list down.” Kim White

Step 2 - decide which one you can focus on physically, mentally, and financially for that year. (yes, only one) Don’t forget to take your time and bandwidth into account too.

Step 3 - Write your one thing at the top of a piece of paper and draw a physical line underneath it. Then write all the other goals underneath that line.

“Confession: we have the thing we're focusing on above the line, but I have 207 things below the line that we are not focusing on.” Kim White

Mapping helps you set your GPS in one single direction.

Once your mapping is in place, you concentrate on what's above the line, confident you won't forget it. And you can feel confident you can do anything you want. It gives you the ability to focus very hardcore on what the most important thing for this year is.

Now, that’s exciting.

1. Mapping Makes You More Productive By Helping You Prioritize

Entrepreneurs usually want to do a lot of things. Sound familiar? Mapping is a place to start weeding out in reality what you can do for the year.

“If you also want to do a whole lot of things, you're in the right crowd.” Kim White

Being productive doesn’t mean starting a whole lot of things and ending up making a big mess. It also doesn’t mean ticking off as many things as you can off your list.

If you want to do things well, you can't do everything at one time. Being productive can mean doing one thing the best way. And that might take a little bit longer. That one thing might have a lot of steps. It might need a whole year of steps.

But prioritizing the one thing that will be the most valuable for your business and doing that well, is the most productive thing you can do as an entrepreneur.

2. Mapping Takes Away The Overwhelm

One of the keys to mapping is that it's not overwhelming.

“We have this whole list of things we want to do in life and business, but when we dial it down to what are we just doing today, that takes all the overwhelm weighing us down away.” Jill Olish

Imagine you have a backpack that you carry throughout the days, weeks, and over the course of your whole lifetime.

And that backpack is full of stuff you shouldn't be carrying around.  Stuff you're afraid you’ll  forget, and stuff you don't know what to do with yet. That bag is packed full.

Can you imagine going through everything you need to do in a day (which is hard enough for most entrepreneurs) but you've added a 100 pound backpack on top of that to carry with you? It's too much. And it's extra effort that's wasted.

The physical example of the backpack is exactly what it’s like in the mental realm.

Imagine the weight of having to do all the things in your business at the same time. That is going to weigh you down and get you stuck or burnt out. And the good news is that you don’t have to do it all.

“While we like to think we are super people, we are not always super people. I am not super-mom. I don't do it all!” Jill Olish

You’ll want to put that backpack away. And try to stick to the process. If something pops up and it’s way down the mapping list, then don’t look at that right now.

Mapping gives you the courage to take care of your mental capacity, and to stay on track to accomplishing what you really want to.

“Mapping takes the hard out of having to figure out everything at the same time.” Jill Olish

3. Mapping Keeps The Entrepreneurial Adventure Fun!

Are you like a Golden Retriever?

Have you ever watched a Golden Retriever trying to put two balls in its mouth at the same time? It's the most hysterical thing. They want to gather up all the balls because they want them all.

That’s entrepreneur life in a nutshell. And just like the Golden Retrievers, trying to keep too many balls at the same time makes you miss out on the fun.

If the dogs are so focused on keeping hold of that second ball, they miss out on all the fun of the game: bringing the ball back, watching it fly through the air, chasing it down, and racing back to the thrower again. It could be hours of fun, but they won’t have any of it.

“We all like to say we're juggling lots of things. But when you're juggling, you're only ever touching one thing at a time. The others are up in the air. Is it really worth it to juggle 5 things if you're just gonna drop it?” Jill Olish

In business, when you pick up one thing, you have to drop the other thing, so being focused on the one thing above the line keeps you on track, doing the fun things, without losing out on the momentum you’re gaining.

Business is hard enough without feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and being weighed down with an endless To-Do List.

Mapping gives you clarity so you can move faster.

So take some time to slow down, start mapping, and get focused this year. What are you waiting for? Block out some time in your diary right now.

“Here's the thing about mapping - if you haven’t done it, just stop and do it.” Kim White

Whether it’s January or June, mapping does not have a time factor to it. There is no hard and fast rule about when to do mapping.
