How To Scale Your Business The Smart Way
Is it your goal this year to scale your business?

Growing your business can look like an increased profit, or hiring a bigger team. It could mean creating more products or doing more collaborations.

Whatever your specific goal is, the common trajectory for most entrepreneurs is growth. But are you ready for growth? And is your business really ready to scale?

“A lot of people wanna scale mess.” Kim White

Before you get ready to scale your business, you might need to learn some lessons from the humble tree.

Here are 4 lessons to take on board so you can scale your business the smart way, when the time is right.

1. It’s Easy To Scale On A Good Foundation

Think of your business as a tree.

The roots of a tree are vital to its success. They determine if a tree has the potential for growth, and they impact how fast the tree can grow.

“You don’t see the foundational things - the roots - unless you’re looking for them.” Kim White

Taking care of your roots means taking time to “tree” your business

It’s one of the not-so-glamorous parts of business. But it’s a simple practice that will keep your business growing with every new goal you set each quarter, each month, each year, and even each decade.

The roots of your business also include the not-so-fun things like keeping your business lean and mean financially, keeping the right people on your team, and working with the right clients.

If there are no roots, you cannot have a big healthy trunk (or a big healthy business).

So, how are the roots in your business? Before you start spending time, money, and bandwidth on scaling your business the glamorous way, spend as much as you need to on taking care of that foundation.

When you have a good foundation, you can scale your business the right way.

2. The Smart Way To Grow Is To Go Slow

“Slowing down makes sense for so many reasons, but it is always the opposite of what entrepreneurs want to do.” Kim White

When you're starting in business, you just want to run fast. You know you’re making mistakes, but you’re thinking, "If I just make more money, I can fix whatever has gone wrong.”

Unfortunately, scaling a mess just creates a more expensive mess.

It creates a cycle of constant stress and worry when you don’t have things in the right order and are going too fast. It means you’re always having to figure out how to make more money to fix things, delegate tasks, or stretch yourself beyond your bandwidth.

But think about the old 100-year-old tree standing in a field or a forest. You can see how all the branches have grown out of another bigger branch slowly over time. The trunk is thick, there are countless branches, and there is a huge umbrella of shade in each direction.

That tree took a long time to grow.

Slowing down and treeing something in your business is also not the glamorous part. But it's the part that makes you stay in business by setting up the processes you will use to complete each goal you have.

Scaling your business the right way means going slow and doing the right things in the right order.

3. Growing Sometimes Means Surviving

“Every business is going to have a storm.” Kim White

Part of being ready to scale your business means being ready for the bad times that come along the entrepreneurial journey.

You're always going to have something that you can't control. And so, being prepared with great roots is what’s going to determine if you’ll stay upright in the storms.

And having a flexible trunk is going to allow that wind to blow you almost right down to the ground and then pop back up again after the storm and be totally fine.

Treeing is the process that helps your business last through a storm because it keeps you on track, doing the right things in the right order, even when it feels like you are in the middle of a hurricane.

4. What’s Your Business Growth Mindset: Flower Or Tree?

“Some trees have flowers, but a tree is not a flower. A flower is here for a season and gone. A tree is something that lasts.” Kim White

Everybody can see the pretty gold leaves on the tree or the flowers in spring, but focusing on the leaves and flowers is not what will help you grow a tree. And it won’t help you scale your business the right way.

If you're building a business that you want to last, you have to know what you've got under the ground. You need to make sure that your tree is fed well, watered well, and that it’s planted in the right place with the right soil and the right amount of sunlight.

You’ve got to do the things that have to be done, or your business can't work. It can't thrive, it won't grow, and it won't do all the things you’re wanting it to do.

It might not look pretty to everyone else. And it might not get too much attention at the beginning, but if you know your business is a tree (and not a flower), you’ll be able to scale your business the right way and keep growing with unstoppable momentum.

“We wanna skip right to the leaves, the pretty things, the glamorous things, but without the branches, the trunk, and the roots, the pretty leaves won't survive. They will just blow away in the wind.” Kim White

“When you're building your business, you have to think about all the things that make it run, that are not the sexy bits.” Kim White

Whatever you're doing to protect and take care of the roots system of your business is what’s going to grow your business slow, strong, and firm through the storms.
